Cattleya is a species of epiphtyic and lithophytic orchids native to Central and South America. This orchid is known for it's stunning flowers. Cattleyas grow on the rocks and trees and absorb moisture from the warm, humid conditions of the rainforest. The goal is to mimic these conditions as much as possible.

Care

Light: Cattleya need moderate levels of light, however they can accommodate higher light environments if they are given enough humidity and air movement to keep their leaves cool. Cattleya leaves will turn dark green and will not flower if they are not receiving enough light. Foliage will be light yellow-green when they receive enough light (+ humidity and temperature, too). When leaves are yellow or have block burn spots, they are receiving too much light.

Temperature and Humidity: These orchids prefer respectively cooler temperatures than other plants, and prefer temperatures between 65F to75F, although they can tolerate short periods of temperatures between 55F and 90sF. At higher temperatures, additional humidity and air movement is critical to avoid damage. Cattleyas prefer humidity levels between 40% and 70%.

Water and Feeding: Only water Cattleyas when the substrate dries out. In general, it's better to underwater than overwater Cattleyas. Once a week is a good rule of thumb, but many factors can change this recommendation. Like most plants, brown/mushy roots are a sign of overwatering. Grey/shriveled roots are a sign of under watering.

Flowering

Cattleyas will flower will flower year after year with proper care. After the flowers fall off of a spike, you may cut the flower spike.

A note on live plants

Every live plant is unique. Your plant will be cared for like it's our own and will be selected especially for you. Please note that unless otherwise identified, the plant you receive will vary from the picture provided (i.e. different number of leaves).
